This was a group project in the 3rd year of my degree at Manchester School of Architecture. We chose the Philharmonie primarily because our lecturer thought it was a good idea, but as we visited and especially when we attended a concert there, the quality of the building really showed itself. This has become one of my all time favourite buildings. What appears so complex in plan and section is remarkably clear when in person. The whole building is designed around the flow of people attending concerts and recitals. This really was a revolutionary design, and although it has been copied widely, I'm not sure it has been bettered.

Singing Ringing Tree

I read about this in one of the Architecture Now! series, then realised it was here on my doorstep. The Singing Ringing Tree, by Tonkin Liu is part of a beacons project around Burnley and Pendle in East Lancashire. Made of varying lengths of steel tubing with tiny grooves, it 'sings' different chords. In practicality it hums a very faint, low sound once in a while. All the same, a nice idea and a welcome addition to East Lancashire by a world known architect.

Toward An Architecture
I've named this blog Toward An Architecture as a reference to the seminal work by Le Corbusier. This title also signifies my wish to explore my personal agenda towards architecture and urbanism, and my development becoming an architect.
Why I'm doing this
This first post is to explain my intention with this blog. I wanted a place where I can record and share my experiences with architecture and the built environment. I want to record what I'm reading/watching/visiting/liking and just see where it goes!
